MEA
listing for products in the City of New York is no longer required. On
July 1, 2008 the administrative authority of the New York City MEA
(Mechanical Equipment Acceptance) division was repealed. The Office of
Technical Certification and Research (OTCR) absorbed the functions of
the MEA division. OTCR now recognizes products that are
"code-prescribed" and can be used without Department of Buildings or
OTCR evaluation or approval.
Products that are “code-prescribed” are those products
that have been tested and approved by third party agencies such as the
Canadian Standards Association (CSA), Underwriter’s Laboratories’(UL)
and ETL certification by Intertek. These products must display the logo
of the agency that conducted the product approval.
Prior to July 1, 2008 the City Of New York Materials and
Equipment Acceptance Division required products to be submitted for
approval prior to installation in New York City. When the product was
approved by the MEA Division a MEA approval number was assigned to that
product.
For any company's products which display the listing
agency’s logo on the equipment rating plate, application in New York
City is approved where applicable, without an MEA listing number. The
certification logo can usually also be found in the equipment Product
Data Sheet.
